Yet Kenny Jackett's side could not extend their advantage further and were almost made to pay against the basement side.

Hope Akpan missed a gilt-edged opportunity to snatch a point for the Bantams in stoppage-time, while David Ball sent a free-kick just around the post with the final kick of the game.

Gallen was delighted to return to Fratton Park with an 11th success of the campaign.

But the assistant manager is adamant Pompey can still improve in the final third.

He said: '˜We're always trying to look where we can improve.

'˜Our counter-attacking football, we do feel, can be better.

'˜We do feel we can have a moment of clarity on the final pass or the final finish.

'˜We do feel we need to work on that and kill teams off, really.

'˜There were some opportunities in the second half to go and do that. It didn't quite happen for us but, as always, it's something we'll concentrate and work on.

'˜All the games for us, apart from a couple at the start of the season at home, have been pretty tight.

'˜Of course, we would love to score some more but, ultimately, when you do come away from home and win 1-0 then it's still a good feeling.'
