Gosport Borough dealt late blow at Hitchin

LATE chances were not enough to earn Gosport any points in their 2-1 defeat at Hitchin Town in the Southern League premier division.

The home side took the lead, before Craig McAllister equalised for the visitors.

But Hitchin found the winner on 80 minutes.

Gosport had an early chance after getting a free-kick in a dangerous position after two minutes. But Patrick Suraki’s effort was cleared for a corner.

Despite early pressure from the visitors, it was the home side who took the lead on nine minutes.

Treymane Charles’ shot was blocked and the ball fell to Robbie Burns who slotted it home.

Gosport took just four minutes to equalise when McAllister met a pass and found the net.

The game was end-to-end, with both sides having chances.

On 31 minutes, Hitchin had calls for a penalty after Burns appeared to be nudged in the box, but the referee ruled it a corner.

Ryan Pennery could have put Gosport ahead shortly after the break, but Johnson was able to clear the danger.

On 51 minutes, the hosts hit the bar when Burns caught Gosport goalkeeper Patrick O’Flaherty off his line.

Hitchin took the lead on the 80th minute.

Ben Walster picked up the ball from a throw-in and cannoned his shot into the net off the post.

But it was a nervy end as Gosport battled to draw level.

Borough substitute Joel Jackson hit the cross bar in added time, with a corner by the visitors being cleared off the line just before the final whistle.
