But while things may appear rosy on the field of play, off it, fourth-placed Gosport have been unable to pay a tax bill or their players over the course of this month.

Pike, who revealed he has been operating under a transfer embargo for the past six weeks, has also been left out of pocket.

‘I am a fighter – I never chuck the towel in and I hope the players I recruit reflect my sentiments,’ said Pike.

‘But all I can do is look after my own position.

‘The difference between probably me and the players is that I trust the chairman to get us out of it.

‘When we had some bad results a couple of seasons ago, the press was on to him about sacking the manager.

‘He turned around and said: “The manager has got us into this mess and the manager will get us out of this mess”.
