Gosport's very own Leicester City team celebrate a miracle turn around

The FA Cup at Gosport Borough Football Club last year - now the team have got their hands on their own piece of silverware

But they aren’t the only football team to send shockwaves through the football world as a Gosport squad has proved.

Gosport Borough’s under-12s Tigers have secured promotion just three years after they failed to win a match for an entire season.

Now, they are victorious and are heading up to the C Division of the Portsmouth Youth League. They have lost just two games all season.

Manager Aaron Haggard said he is bursting with pride at the efforts of the team he took under his wing three years ago and said it has hugely helped their confidence.

‘We took over the team when they had just finished bottom of the league,’ he said.

‘The ability was there but it was all about confidence.

‘It got to the point where they were turning up for the match and in the back of their mind, they had already lost.

‘We worked hard on getting them up to the standard they should have been at.’

The team finished their first season under new management in mid-table and the following season they narrowly missed out on promotion.

Now, the hard work has paid off and they have won the league.

‘A lot of kids at that age would have said football isn’t for them,’ Aaron added.

‘They had been losing games 10-0. So credit to them because they turned up because they didn’t want to let the team down. They worked unbelievably hard.

‘It’s helped massively with their confidence. It’s a message to any youth team in any sport that if you have the right attitude, you work hard and if you want it enough, it will happen.

‘We want to thank all the players who have been involved in the team since the early days.

‘Thank you to the parents who have travelled here, there and everywhere on a cold Sunday morning.

‘Credit to them as well because without them driving the boys around, this wouldn’t have happened.’

It is a turnaround that saw the team concede 87 goals in a season three years ago, to just 13 this year.

And Aaron said there has been a comparison with Leicester City throughout the campaign.

After narrowly escaping relegation from the Premier League last term, the Foxes sit top of the table and are on course to pull off one of the greatest feats in sporting history.

‘Our assistant manager Kevin Woodford is a Leicester fan so every game he has compared it to how Leicester got on the Saturday before,’ added Aaron.

‘It’s been an ongoing joke all season.’
