Hawks striker Tommy Wright happy to accept his manager’s 30-goal target

The 24-year-old forward has made a superb start to life since joining Hawks in the summer, scoring 12 goals in all competitions.

His return of eight strikes in 10 National League South matches is the equal fifth highest in the division - bettered only byJason Prior (Dorking, 12), Ryan Seager (Hungerford, 12), Jake Robinson (Billericay, 10) and Charlie Sheringham (Dartford, 9).

Doswell told The News yesterday that he could see Wright reaching the 30-goal milestone mark, and the player is also aiming high.

‘Dos spoke to me, we both agreed at the start of the season that we weren’t going to set any goal targets because we weren’t sure on how I’d react coming back to football,' revealed Wright.

'But now that I’m doing better, a lot better, and scoring goals he wants 30 out of me. That’s what I’m looking to do, so 30 is my target now for sure.’

Due to positive Covid-19 tests in their camp, Hawks have twice had to self-isolate for 10 days and have only played once in the league since December 12 - a 4-2 home win over Hungerford on January 2.

‘It’s been made worse (self-isolation breaks) with how well I was playing before the two breaks,’ Wright said.

'You just want to keep playing games when you’re on a run like I was.'

Wright's flying form saw him bag the National League South player of the month award for December.

A return of five goals in four matches across the month, which included a hat-trick against Chelmsford, did not go unnoticed.

Despite having played the fewest games in the division (10), Hawks still sit seventh with a host of fixtures in hand on all the sides above them.

Wright believes a return of two points per game so far this season is promotion form, but now it's about making sure they keep it up.

'Considering we’re still in the play-offs and we’ve played five less games than some teams shows how well we’ve started,' he added.

‘We’re averaging two points a game which is enough to definitely put you in the top two - if not the top.

‘Obviously as a club we want to get promoted, and as a player I want to get promoted and I know the rest of the team do.

‘We’ve just got to make sure we keep winning games.'

Hawks are due to play only their second game since December 19 when they host Eastbourne Borough in the National League South today.
