Hermann to train with Pompey again

Pompey are to give a trial to Hermann Hreidarsson.

The former Fratton favourite is set to link up with Michael Appleton’s squad tomorrow in a bid to win a deal.

The veteran defender has told Appleton he is prepared to play for nothing.

That has interested the Blues boss enough to run the rule over Hreidarsson, just eight months after letting him leave for Coventry City.

Aged 38, the Icelandic international has made 123 appearances and scored eight goals for the Blues.

Now the chance is there for him to complete a shock return and add to that record.

Appleton said: ‘Hermann will come in and train with us towards the end of the week and we will see where he is from a fitness point of view.

‘He tells me he wants to play for nothing but we will assess him.

‘I am certainly not ruling it out. We will see how his fitness is, like we would do with any triallist.

‘Nothing may come of it but we are not ruling it out.

‘We haven’t got a clue about his fitness, so we will see how he is.’

Paul Connolly came off with a groin problem in last night’s win over Bournemouth.

Meanwhile Mustapha Dumbuya (Sierra Leone) and Conor Clifford (Republic of Ireland under-21s) have gone away on international duty.

So once more Appleton’s squad looks short on numbers.

He added: ‘That’s the way it is – it’s a bit of a mess.

‘As much as it’s nice, you don’t want to be asking favours of people.

‘It makes the club look unprofessional at times and that is the frustration from my point of view.’
