How Liverpool's surprise defeat at Watford leaves Havant & Waterlooville standing alone with fine record

The Hawks had some reason to raise a smile yesterday – even though their National League South clash at Welling United was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

Following Premier League leaders Liverpool’s surprise 3-0 defeat at Watford, Paul Doswell’s side now stand proudly as the only team in the top six tiers of English football still with an unbeaten away league record still intact this season.

Jurgen Klopp’s troops, who the Hawks were beaten 5-2 by in a FA Cup fourth-round tie at Anfield in 2008, had not lost any of their 13 league matches on the road this term prior to suffering a shock sting against the Hornets at Vicarage Road.

But now it’s just Doswell’s sixth-tier promotion-chasers who can boast that fine record in the current campaign.

Of the 15 National League South matches played away from Westleigh Park this season, the Hawks have won nine and drawn the other six.

That’s a stark contrast to the seven of 16 matches on home turf where they’ve managed to take maximum points in the 2019/20 campaign so far.

It’s largely down to the form on the road that has kept the Hawks in the National League South promotion and title race.

They currently sit fifth in the table, eight points adrift of leaders Wealdstone with 11 games to go.

With six away league matches left to play this season, the Hawks will have one eye on that fine record still remaining unblemished come next month.

Billericay, who have not been beaten at home in the National League South this term, will look to change that as they host Doswell’s team on Tuesday.
