Tareiq Holmes-Dennis played 15 times for Huddersfield last season

If he is fit and playing, Kenny Jackett has himself a marauding left-back capable of bombing forward and getting the ball into the box.

Huddersfield last season operated with a 4-5-1 on paper, with an awful lot of emphasis on full-backs Chris Lowe and Tom Smith attacking, while Jonathan Hogg dropped back from midfield to make a back three.

On occasions, Holmes-Dennis would also come into that full-back role and was expected to go up and down that left wing, overlapping whenever he could.

What’s more, he’s got good delivery. Huddersfield, on occasions, can be accused of overplaying, but he has always been keen to whip the ball into the box.

Certainly, he never let the side down in his 15 appearances last season.

Holmes-Dennis arrived at the Terriers last summer and was the final signing – number 13 – of a very busy summer for the club.

Lowe arrived from Kaiserslautern during that same period and he enjoyed a phenomenal maiden season to restrict the youngster’s appearances.

The club’s own progress has been rapid, so there are those players whose personal progress has not kept pace.

However, the former Charlton product is still only 21 and has shown he possesses qualities which can be developed. There is definitely a lot more scope to develop him at this stage of his career.

We thought the full-back positions would not be areas David Wagner would strengthen this summer, others roles were more of a priority.

However, they are pretty confident of signing Fulham’s Scott Malone to provide competition to Lowe at left-back – leaving Holmes-Dennis to instead go out on loan.

In fairness, we didn’t get to see much of him, although there were appearances in the FA Cup run against Port Vale, Rochdale and Manchester City.

He also featured in both legs of the play-off semi-final against Sheffield Wednesday.

Huddersfield are in the Premier League this coming season and their signings have been encouraging, but if they did get relegated, Holmes-Dennis might well be an option for the future.

He can be a decent Championship player – and maybe one day the Premier League.
