It's not just Pompey who need your support - there's plenty of other local clubs out there

Last weekend was a momentous one. Pompey fans were allowed back in the stands for the first time since mid-March.

As I said last week, it’s just a start. We need to keep pushing for more and more fans to be allowed into grounds as it becomes safer for all concerned.

It will take a while for Pompey to welcome 18,000, or for Brighton, for example, to pack in 25,000 or 30,000.

But that doesn’t mean everyone still unable to get a particular game has to sit at home moping.

There are numerous local teams who are back in action, offering decent standards of football and ready to welcome some new faces.

In this part of the world, I imagine there are plenty of Blues fans who have a second team in the non-league world that they follow and, in many cases, go to watch when they can.

But there must be many who have never tried it. Well now is the perfect time to do so.

Sadly and ironically, clubs at Gosport Borough. Moneyfields and Bognor’s levels have gone from being allowed more fans than anyone to playing no league games at all.

The Southern and Isthmian Leagues have voted not to restart until lockdown restrictions and differences in Covid tiers make it simpler.

But above and below those leagues, there is plenty of non-league action to be lapped up – from Havant and Waterlooville in the National League to the likes of Horndean, Baffins and AFC Portchester in the Wessex – and more in the Hampshire League if you keep on going down the leagues.

If you doubt that the quality of football on offer is not up to what you want to see, I challenge you to try it just once.

You may be pleasantly surprised - and even if some of the play leaves a bit to be desired, you’ll still have a very cheap and sociable day out.
