Knight: A bad day but as Pompey boss says - keep going

That has to be the over-riding sentiment after the disappointment at Stevenage.

It’s important we don’t let the result affect confidence, although we have to take on board where we went wrong.

I don’t go in for all the talk about the formation being the reason for defeat.

To be perfectly honest, I just think Stevenage wanted it more than we did.

Having said that, I do think the 3-0 scoreline did flatter them – but they did deserve to win. I’m not saying they are a better team than us, but they were worthy winners of the game.

Perhaps some of the luck which we’ve had in recent games went to them, too. That happens sometimes.

But, overall, we have to put the result to bed, move on and get another winning run going.

The timing of the third goal at the start of the second half killed the game.

If we’d got the next goal to make it 2-1 it would’ve been game on and we could have possibly nicked a point.

Unfortunately, it didn’t pan out like that, we hit the bar a couple of times and then there was Christian Burgess’ sending off.

I thought that decision was harsh on Christian. To send someone off for what merely looked like obstruction I wasn’t too sure about.

Then came Conor Chaplin’s penalty miss at the end, which just about summed the day up. I don’t want to harp on about it too much and I believe he has been spoken to about it. He’ll learn from it.

The only way to respond now is to go and win this weekend and put some more victories together.

We’ve had three fantastic performances before losing to a side in good form, despite losing to Blackpool.

There are lessons to be learnt, but I don’t think the bleakness and downbeat mood of Crewe was back.

The brilliant fans singing after the game helped on that front and kept spirits high.

It’s not one of my favourite sayings, but it was a bad day at that office – and that can only be put right in the next game.

Meanwhile, it’s good to see our defence featuring prominently in League Two’s team of the year.

David Forde, Enda Stevens and Christian Burgess are all worthy of their place in that side after their performances this season.

And I would add Matt Clarke should be in there, too. He’s been a real unsung hero.

Just, finally, it was great to catch up with my old mate Mick Quinn on Saturday.

Quinny came to Waverley Bowls Club in Southsea in a fundraiser for Mencap and I must say it’s the fittest I’ve ever seen him look, and, of course, he was on good form at a night all enjoyed.
