Ladies start Moneyfields’ hectic Dover Road schedule … at least they won’t have these problems in two seasons’ time!

A hectic sequence of games on Moneyfields’ main pitch at Dover Road starts on Tuesday night.

Storm Dennis resulted in two more postponements at the ground over the weekend - the first team clash with Bristol Manor Farm on the Saturday and the ladies’ game with Woodley 24 hours later.

That has left the four teams who regularly use the main pitch still with 20 home league games left to play between them in 2019/20 - plus at least four cup ties.

Moneyfields ladies are due to host Gosport Falcons in the Portsmouth Senior Cup on Tuesday (7.45pm).

That is followed by the under-18s hosting AFC Stoneham in a cup tie this Thursday.

In all, Dave Carter’s first team have eight league games left - the next one being against Highworth on Saturday, March 7.

They also have a home Hampshire Senior Cup semi-final with AFC Bournemouth next Tuesday, and possibly a Portsmouth Senior Cup quarter-final with Denmead to fit in.

Denmead have been drawn at home, but might have to switch the tie to Dover Road if they can't find a suitable midweek venue as their usual Front Lawn pitch is fully booked.

Karl Watson’s promotion-chasing ladies side also have five home Southern Premier League games left to play.

The club’s reserves have four more Hampshire Premier League Division 1 fixtures to complete, as well as a Hampshire Trophy semi-final with Brading Town on Saturday, February 29.

On occasions this season, the reserves have played HPL games on a 3G pitch to ensure the fixture goes ahead.

The under-18s, meanwhile, have three Hampshire Youth League games remaining on March 1 and 22 and April 5.

‘It’s been a fraught season at times administration-wise,’ said Moneys secretary Pete Larkin.

‘It will be a lot easier when the new facilities are in place.’

Indeed it will be, as the £3.5m redevelopment of Dover Road will see all Moneyfields teams playing home games on a 3G pitch.

‘I’m a bit old school but I know 3G pitches are the way forward,’ Larkin said.

‘Some of the older players aren’t so keen on them, but the younger ones like them.’

More and more non-league clubs have been installing 3G pitches in recent years.

Bromley, Maidstone United and Sutton United have all hosted National League games on an artificial surface, while Pompey played an FA Cup tie on one at Harrogate last November.

Hawks played on one at Slough last weekend, while Moneyfields did the same at Cirencester Town earlier this month.

Walton Casuals, Merthyr Town and Dorchester are three clubs in Gosport Borough’s Southern Premier League South division with 3G surfaces.

At Wessex League level, three clubs have 3G - Hamworthy United, AFC Stoneham and Alton.

Denmead and AFC Petersfield play home games on them in the HPL Division 1 at Front Lawn and Petersfield School respectively.
