The Black Cats twice looked set to return to winning ways by squeezing past the Posh at the Stadium of Light, but were hampered by Bryan Oviedo's 68th-minute red card and were ultimately forced to settle for a point.

Josh Maja put the hosts in front after 21 minutes, but, after Oviedo's straight red, Joe Ward quickly equalised for Steve Evans' men.

Doncaster's hopes of putting more pressure on Pompey came to an abrupt end at Accrington.

Offrande Zanzala popped up with the only goal of the game in the 87th minute for John Coleman's Stanley.

And Barnsley failed to get past bottom club Plymouth at Oakwell, with Alex Mowatt's eighth-minute header cancelled out by a long-range strike from Ruben Lameiras for the visitors shortly before half-time.

Scunthorpe emerged with the three points from an eight-goal thriller against Charlton at Glanford Park.

The visitors led when Lyle Taylor and Joe Aribo cancelled out Charlie Goode's early opener, but a rare brace from Cameron Borthwick-Jackson helped Scunthorpe have the edge before half-time.

Aribo's second of the night after 69 minutes pulled the score back to 3-3, but a Josh Morris penalty and a late effort from Stephen Humphrys confirmed a 5-3 victory for the hosts.

Southend came from behind to win 2-1 at Burton, who had led through Liam Boyce's 21st-minute header.

Tom Hopper's effort just past the hour mark pulled the Shrimpers back level and Simon Cox won it from close range in the 78th minute.

Adebayo Akinfenwa scored in the second half to grab a point for Wycombe in a 1-1 draw at Fleetwood, who led through Paddy Madden's 37th-minute header.

Bradford shrugged off their poor start to the new campaign with a welcome 1-0 win at Wimbledon thanks to Jack Payne's penalty in first-half injury-time.

Dan Potts headed a dramatic injury-time winner for Luton in a 2-1 win at struggling Oxford.

The home side led through Ricky Holmes' effort early in the second half, but James Collins equalised for Luton and Oxford were up against it after Shandon Baptiste's 73rd-minute sending off.

Magnus Norman also saw red on the stroke of half-time as Rochdale were held to a 0-0 draw by Bristol Rovers, while Walsall's home clash with Shrewsbury also ended goalless.
