Losing midfielder shows Pompey wage cap is serious

The Blues believe not stretching their budget to bring in the midfielder shows they are serious about the salary cap in place at Fratton Park.

Racon looks set to join League One outfit Bradford after a loan stay with Guy Whittingham’s side.

Whittingham was keen to bring the Frenchman back to the club this season but a move was never on the cards due to his wage demands.

Racon was believed to have asked for around £4,000-a-week – and that figure would never have been met in Pompey’s total budget of around £1.2m.

Assistant manager Steve Allen said: ‘There are some good players here, some real good players.

‘Therry Racon we tried to keep. He is a good lad but I think he is going to go to Bradford.

‘I don’t know what money he is looking for but it is more than what we could offer.

‘We have a ceiling and that hasn’t been broken and it won’t be broken.’

Pompey’s summer recruiting is now coming to a close after bringing in 14 players.

Whittingham has been frugal in his deals to build a squad – and that is something he makes no apologies for.

He said: ‘We have to be responsible for our actions and, having been here through everything for the last four or five years, I know where spending too much gets people.

‘We know what we are responsible for, we know we are responsible for the playing side of things and that affects everything else.

‘We don’t take that lightly at all – we are serious about it.

‘We want to help this club rebuild and get up these leagues again as quickly as we possibly can.’
