'I believe this is a big signing and major coup for the club,' said Gale of the player who was released by Pompey a few months ago.

'Matt has been training with us during the summer and is a fantastic lad with a great attitude.

'He wants to get back into the professional game and is prepared to step down to help make that happen.

'I told him when he first came to us that he needs to be playing games.

'What he needs to do is play more men's football.

'He has a lot to learn but can use us as a stepping stone to moving back up.

'The lad is easily capable of playing at a much higher level.

'He is a good footballer and is confident coming out with the ball from the back.

'At six foot eight he now needs to learn how to use his size to his advantage.

'In the club we are looking to attract the best young talent and Matt adds to this.'

The 20-year-old defender has played for Gosport in pre-season already and is in the squad for Tuesday’s friendly against the Hawks at Privett Park.

Gale also hopes to have a number of other players back after the weekend trip to Hungerford Town was called off due to a spate of injuries.

He views the Hawks game as a perfect test for his squad ahead of their Southern League campaign.

'This will be a tough test which is exactly what we want,' said Gale.

'The Hawks are easily one of the top four teams in Conference South.

'They have changed their team and have a lot more pace.

'They also possess a potent threat up front.

'We have had a good pre-season, though it has got a bit bitty lately with injuries.

'I am looking to bring in a couple more new faces as we are a couple short of what we need.

'It is all about where we are at with two games to go before the league season starts.'

Gosport’s first Southern League Premier South game is at Chesham on September 19.
