Meet the least succesful Pompey manager over 38 years

His win percentage at the Fratton Park helm ranks as the worst.

And Alain Perrin, John Gregory and Richie Barker aren’t far behind over the past 38 years.

The former England skipper won only four of his 22 matches in all competitions – 18.18 per cent of games while in charge.

He stepped in for the visit of Fulham in October 2008, following Harry Redknapp’s controversial eve of match departure for Spurs.

The result was a 1-1 draw and Adams was subsequently appointed permanent manager by Sacha Gaydamak.

However, his tenure would reap just 11 Premier League points from a possible 48, with wins against Sunderland and Blackburn.

There were also triumphs against Heerenveen in the Uefa Cup and Bristol City in the FA Cup.

Yet Adams was dismissed in February 2008 following 106 days at the helm.

His Pompey record is only marginally worse than Perrin, who arrived at Fratton Park in April 2005.

Replacing Velimir Zajec, the Frenchman kicked off with a 4-2 victory over Charlton, followed by a memorable 4-1 demolition of Southampton three matches later.

Perrin, though, totalled only four wins in 21 matches, losing 11 of them, to give him a ratio of 19.04 per cent.

His managerial spell lasted seven-and-a-half months, before Redknapp returned for his second spell in charge.

Gregory and Barker, much-maligned among supporters, are level with a win return of 20 per cent.

Gregory stepped up from chief coach to replace Alan Ball as the Blues’ boss in January 1989.

He proved unpopular with the players and won only 10 of his 50 matches in charge in all competitions.

In the process, he lost half of his 46 fixtures in Division One and, ultimately, Jim Gregory sacked him 13 days short of a year’s anniversary in the role.

Finally, Barker spent 109 days as Pompey manager, having succeeded Guy Whittingham in December 2013.

With the Blues already out of all cup competitions before his arrival, Barker oversaw solely League Two fixtures.

The return was four wins in 20 matches – and only 20 points from a possible 60.

He left by mutual consent in March 2014, following a 3-0 defeat at Rochdale.
