The visitors had two early chances to go ahead but Ryan Pennery's effort after two minutes went just wide of the post.

Then Craig McAllister's header a minute later glanced over the crossbar.

Despite dominating the ball, Gosport went behind on eight minutes.

Walton's Taureen Roberts used his skill to get past the Borough defence, setting up Dan Bennett who slotted the ball into the net.

In the 18th minute home goalkeeper Denzel Gerrar was called into action, catching Tony Lee's cross into the box.

The hosts had a chance to double their lead but James Newington could not latch onto a pass in the penalty area.

In the 52nd minute, Walton did extend their lead.

Roberts, who had been causing problems for the Gosport defence, ran towards goal and put the ball into the net.

Two minutes later, Borough thought they had got a goal back through McAllister, but he was deemed offside by the referee.

A couple of quick corners for the hosts could have seen the game put to bed but the visitors held strong to clear the ball to safety.

Gosport substitute Robert Flooks, on for Lee, saw his 73rd-minute shot deflected wide.
