The Blues levelled matters late on when substitute Michael Smith scrambled home from close range - cancelling out Daniel O’Shaughnessy’s second-half opener for the hosts.

But while Cook praised the character of his side for bouncing back to earn a share of the spoils, he was left frustrated by the number of missed Pompey chances.

The Blues are now in fifth place in the League Two table after dropping one place.

Cook said: ‘It was a smashing game, a really good game.

‘Very committed from both teams - both teams put everything into the match.

‘I think we showed a little bit more quality than Cheltenham, but Cheltenham were certainly a bit more aggressive than us.

‘But we had some great chances.

‘Carl Baker’s header before half-time was a clear-cut chance, Conor Chaplin’s header, Gary Roberts’ shot – these were great chances

‘Unfortunately, we had the disappointment of going behind but great credit to the players for coming back and getting a point.’
