New Pompey defender shocked at hurtling emergence

The defender continued his hurtling emergence in the game as he became Paul Cook’s seventh summer signing yesterday.

The central defender arrives on a two-year deal after leaving Accrington Stanley this summer.

Davies explained it’s a dream move to join an outfit of the Blues’ standing in the game.

That’s with the 24-year-old being a professional for just two years.

He failed to make an appearance after moving to Fleetwood from FC United of Manchester in 2014.

That paved the way for his move to the Crown Ground, where he impressed last term during 38 outings.

Davies was looking to a career out of the game after being released by Blackburn as a teenager.

But after going to university and playing non-league football his star is now on the rise.

‘It’s unbelievable,’ said Davies.

‘I’ve only been in the game professionally for two years and one of those was a season at Fleetwood where I didn’t play.

‘I think that gives me hunger, though.

‘I’m pinching myself and it’s an unbelievable feeling to get it over the line.

‘With respect to Accrington, I’ve gone from a smallish club to a place like this.

‘A club of this size is literally one you can’t turn down.

‘I first heard about it Thursday last week.

‘When I got wind of it I was on the phone to everyone trying to make it happen as quickly as I could!

‘I flew down Sunday night and met the other lads in training.

‘But I’ve been champing at the bit to get it signed.

‘I’ve finally got it done now. It’s a really good feeling.

‘It’s being drilled into me what’s expected – I want to be a part of getting the club where it deserves to be.’

Davies admitted he had some nervy moments between hearing of Pompey’s interest and sealing the move.

And he has been taken by the facilities on offer at his new club.

He said: ‘I’m a worrier at the best of times and have been on edge this week.

‘Everyone has been telling me to relax and it will get done, but there was no better feeling than finally putting pen to paper.

‘I couldn’t sign the forms quickly enough.

‘You see the training ground and you see the players and facilities. It’s something you want to be a part of as a pro.

‘It’s incredible to be here. The pitches are like bowling greens and the gaffer took me to Fratton Park the other day.

‘It looks even bigger with no-one in it.

‘It’s a massive, unbelievable stadium and I can’t wait to play there when it’s full.

‘I’ve finally signed for the club and I’m loving it.’
