No Kranjcar windfall for Pompey after Kiev switch

Pompey will not be receiving a slice of Niko Kranjcar's £5.5m switch to Dynamo Kiev.

The Croatian midfielder left Fratton Park for Spurs in September 2009 for a £2.5m fee.

In turn, he last week moved to Kiev after falling out of Harry Redknapp’s plans at White Hart Lane, making just 12 Premier League appearances last term.

That sparked hopes of a Blues windfall via a sell-on clause.

However, Pompey have confirmed they won’t collect a penny, having not included such an option in the Croatian’s initial transfer to Spurs.

At the time of Kranjcar’s Pompey exit, then-chief executive Peter Storrie was desperately selling off players to avoid the club plunging into administration.

The cultured midfielder was among a number of stars to leave that summer, following 100 appearances and 12 goals for the club.

Kranjcar, currently at Euro 2012 with Croatia, was also a member of the triumphant FA Cup-winning side of 2008 and appeared during the Uefa Cup campaign.

Yet, crucially, there was no stipulation for a sell-on clause in the deal which saw him leave for Spurs.

Other deals completed around that time – like the exits of Glen Johnson and Lassana Diarra – saw sell-on clauses waived in favour of receiving the full transfer fee over a quicker timescale.

Kranjcar arrived at Fratton Park in August 2006 from Hajduk Split for an undisclosed fee.

But it wasn’t until the following season that he established himself with Redknapp as Blues boss.

The Croat started the first five matches of the 2009-10 campaign under Paul Hart.

However, he was then sold to Spurs, going on to make 72 appearances and scoring 11 goals.
