Gosport Borough’s trip to Guernsey was prematurely ended when the match was abandoned with more than 15 minutes remaining.

The floodlights went out on 72 minutes with Gosport leading 6-1 in their final pre-season friendly.

The visitors almost took the lead within 20 seconds of kick-off after a defensive mix-up, but they eventually took the lead after 11 minutes.

New signing Matt Paterson made his mark by coolly slotting past the onrushing keeper fom 15 yards.

Guernsey responded well and Luke Winch drew them level with the hosts’ first shot on goal.

Ben Gerring restored The Boro’s lead on the half hour mark, rising highest to bundle the ball across the line.

Four minutes later, Gosport doubled their advantage thanks to a predatory strike from former Aldershot striker Paterson.

Tom Dunford had a shot brilliantly tipped away by Tom Creed while Justin Bennett also hit the post with a free header just moment later.

Paterson could have completed his hat-trick but his poked shot was cleared off the line by Glyn Dyer.

The visitors went in leading 4-1 at half-time, when Mike Carter smashed home a drive after latching onto Paterson’s cut-back.

Bennett should have buried a chance three minutes after the restart, but his shot was just over Creed’s goal.

It was 5-1 just minutes later though, after a corner wasn’t dealt with and Gerring hammered home.

Bennett finally got on the scoresheet in the 56th minute, after Paterson played a defence-splitting pass and the striker curled the ball in with the outside of his foot.

The referee then stopped the game after 72 minutes when the floodlights went out at the Footes Lane Stadium.
