The Hawks battled to a hard-fought 2-1 win against Tonbridge Angels at the Longmead Stadium this afternoon.
Steve Ramsey gave the Hawks an 11th-minute lead, before the visitors were pegged back by the home side three minutes into the second half.
The game looked destined to finish in a draw as both teams cancelled each other out in the second period.
But that was before Hawks substitute Ollie Palmer returned to the goal trail by heading in a late winner for the Hawks to give them some early Christmas cheer.
Gosport were also celebrating victory after they overcame Stourport Swifts 1-0 in the Southern League south and west division one.
Justin Bennett’s early goal was enough to separate the two teams as Borough’s bid for promotion gained extra momentum.
In Ryman League division one south, goals from Steve Harper (2), Ben Johnson, Terry Dodd and Jason Prior ensured Bognor stay top for Christmas as they saw off the challenge of Whitstable 5-2.
However, there was no early Christmas present for the Wessex League premier division’s bottom club Hayling, who threw away a two-goal lead to lose 5-3 against GE Hamble.
A second-half hat-trick from Hamble’s Jamie Musselwhite inflicted a 16th defeat of the season on Lee Paul’s men, despite Lenny Burney, Alan Ketchen and Lee Tigwell all scoring for the Humbugs.
There was better luck for rivals Moneyfields, however, who were 4-0 winners against Alresford Town.
Steve Hutchings (2), Jamie Hore and Luke Middleton were all on the mark for Miles Rutherford’s side.
