Pike sacked by Gosport Borough – again

Have your say

Gosport Borough expect to have goalscoring talisman Justin Bennett back permanently when they entertain Clevedon Town in Southern League division one south and west.

Borough have recalled Bennett from his loan spell at Blue Square South Eastleigh, hoping his firepower will help propel them into the play-offs.

His return couldn’t come at a more crucial time, with Borough going six games without a win.

Two more defeats in the past week – at Wimborne and AFC Totton – have rocked Borough’s confidence.

The loss at Totton was particularly damaging as Alex Pike’s men found themselves 5-0 down before half-time.

‘It’s important we put the first half at Totton behind us,’ said assistant-manager Mick Catlin.

‘We warned the players how dangerous Totton can be but we still gave the ball away and they punished us for it.

‘Hopefully, the players’ confidence won’t have been dented too much.

‘We must regroup and can’t afford to feel sorry for ourselves.

‘It is no coincidence that we have struggled to find form since Justin left for Eastleigh.

‘He has been on the bench for them and will be coming back with an appetite to get on the goal trail again.’

Borough hope to have experienced defender Aaron Cook back from injury but Dean Arnold faces a fitness test on his knee.

Liam Crook and Liam Sewell are ruled out by injury, and Tom Price has returned to AFC Totton.
