Gosport kept up their push for the Southern League premier division play-offs with a 3-1 win over Chesham at Privett Park.

New signing Rory Williams was given a start up front to take the vacant spot left by league top-scorer Justin Bennett, who is away on his honeymoon in Thailand.

He was quickly in the action, too, taking a pass from Brett Poate to race clear, before powering in a cross that Jamie Brown went close to connecting with at the far post.

With just five minutes played, Gosport were forced to make a change, with Sammy Igoe coming on for Adam Wilde, who limped out of the fray.

And Igoe made a quick impact, sending in a cross for Brown to turn home and make it 1-0.

Moments later, Borough were denied a second as Igoe’s corner fell to Dan Woodward, who blasted the ball into the net but was ruled offside.

Chesham also had a goal scratched out for offside. But their fortunes changes moments later as Nathan Ashmore’s awful clearance fell to James Potton, who calmly finished from the edge of the area.

Seconds before half-time, though, Gosport put together another sparkling move that created a half-chance for Lee Molyneaux, who made the most of it with a left-footed shot that flashed into the corner of the net to give the hosts an interval lead.

Ashmore deemed himself with a couple of quality saves to keep Borough ahead.

Igoe was still pulling the strings and, after going close himself, he put Williams clear who strolled home to make it 3-1.

Gosport should have gone further ahead when Tom Dunford blasted over from point-blank range.

But, despite late pressure from Chesham, Gosport held on to keep their fine run going.
