Gosport Borough suffered late heartache as they lost 2-1 to Barwell.

It was tough on Borough, who looked the better side throughout the Southern League premier division clash at Privett Park.

Adam Wilde had cancelled out Scott Hadland’s Barwell opener.

But unlucky Gosport conceded again late on, in unfortunate circumstances, as a mishit cross found its way into the net.

‘It is hard to accept that we ended up with nothing for a display that deserved a point at the very least,’ said assistant manager Mick Catlin.

Borough conceded first as Barwell’s Hadland sent a bullet of a header past Ashmore.

The equaliser came on 54 minutes – following sustained pressure from the hosts, who were roared on by a good home crowd at Privett Park.

Wilde was sent crashing to the deck by visiting defender Jack Edwards in the box.

The Gosport winger then dusted himself down to net a well-struck spot-kick.

And when the Leicestershire visitors were then reduced to 10-men it looked like Borough would take charge and net the three points.

Defender Edwards – already booked – was dismissed for a bad challenge on Justin Bennett.

But Barwell substitute Luke Barlone settled the contest.

His mishit cross somehow looped over Gosport keeper Ashmore for the winner.

Catlin added: ‘A goal like that has left us totally gutted.

‘The ball seemed to do its own thing and looked to be of no real danger until it suddenly found a way into the roof of our net.

‘At 1-1 it looked as though we would go on and win it against their 10 men.

‘In fact, we should have done so on the chances we had.

‘But there it is. Not only did so many decisions go against us but to lose a match in such ridiculous circumstances has been very hard to swallow.

‘We plan to make sure it doesn’t happen again, beginning at Bideford tomorrow night.’
