Horndean can put the icing on the cake to a fantastic season by overcoming Wessex premier division Moneyfields in the Portsmouth Senior Cup final at Dover Road tonight (7.45pm).

Dave Carter and Mark Poulton have already steered Horndean to promotion from Wessex division one – and they are confident they can add more success.

The management duo have dominated the Portsmouth Senior Cup for the past two years, winning it with both Hayling United and Horndean.

Now they are determined to make it a hat-trick.

‘We are looking to go and win it again,’ said Carter.

‘To get promotion is a fantastic achievement and to win the Portsmouth Senior Cup would be the icing on the cake.

‘We have quality all over the pitch and in Torr Spicer, we have a striker who has scored 19 goals in 16 games.

‘It is a great opportunity for us to show where we are at and where we are going.’

Tom Chapman and Aaron Fennemore are injury doubts but Horndean have Sean Thurgood and Alex Shepherd back from holiday.

Miles Rutherford is confident his Moneyfields side can come out on top and insists the occasion is also a chance for his fringe players to shine.

‘All the lads have done well to be where they are. They should be proud of themselves,’ said Rutherford.

‘We’ll play a mixture of players but those who have been involved from the start will play their part. I have respect for them.’

Rutherford will be watching the clash from the stands, having handed the reins over to reserve team manager Calvin Hore for the night.

Captain Shaun Kerridge and top marksman Warren Hunt are unavailable for selection, as both have joined an ever-growing injury list which now stretches to seven first-team players.
