Horndean were handed a 5-0 pasting by Wessex League premier rivals Bemerton in the FA Vase.

The Deans recalled keeper Simon Howard and he was quickly in the action, first, charging out to clear from Eddie Perrett, before being forced to pick the ball out of his net moments later as striker Dan Young opened the scoring from a corner.

Moments later, Bemerton struck again when Dan Bowman was given all the time and space he needed to blast a second.

The Deans responded and Dan Hayes went close to pulling a goal back as he met a Simon Stone cross, only for Bemerton keeper Grant Porter to turn the ball over his crossbar.

But Bemerton were soon piling on the pressure again and Howard twice denied Young.

Young could not be stopped just before the break, though, going clear before thundering home a third from the edge of the area.

The hosts looked devoid of ideas into how to find a way back into the match and Howard was called on to make saves from Jack Slade and Young to keep the scoreline respectable.

But it counted for little as Bemerton wrapped up the tie with a fourth, Graham Mankin’s powerful header racing into the net.

Even then, things went from bad to worse for Horndean as Slade got in on the blindside of their defence to head in a fifth just before the final whistle.
