Fareham were mauled by title favourites Sholing in the Wessex League premier division last night.

The Cams Alders outfit shipped four goals in the first half at the Silverlake Arena.

Another two flew in after the break as they went down to a 6-0 defeat.

Fareham knew they faced a tough task in their visit to the unbeaten league leaders.

That mission became more difficult after just two minutes when Lee Bright took advantage of hesitant defending to fire the hosts ahead.

And after Fareham’s Wayne Boud saw his dipping free-kick clawed out by Sholing keeper Matt Brown, the home side doubled their advantage.

Byron Mason scampered clear along the line and beat Luke Douglas with a cross-shot that flew in at the far post.

Fareham’s luck showed no sign of turning when they were denied a clear-cut penalty as Ashley Tattersall was chopped down.

And on 35 minutes Lee Wort let fly a shot from 35 yards that slipped through the hands of Douglas and into the net to give Sholing a 3-0 lead.

The mauling continued and three became four on 44 minutes.

Former Gosport Borough centre-back Pete Castle outjumped his marker to meet Tyrone Bowers’ corner and head home. The hosts started the second half looking greedy for more goals.

When Castle got in to poke the ball beyond Douglas for his second, the celebrations were cut short as the goal was ruled out.

But the Fareham keeper was beaten again – and this time it did count – when Barry Mason’s tame header slipped through his fingers and into the roof of the net.

Former Borough striker Ashley Jarvis came off the substitutes’ bench to blast his side six goals ahead – turning his marker to thump a shot past Douglas and into the corner.

Late on Boud came close to netting a consolation for the visitors.

But his strike from a free-kick raced inches wide of the post and that was as good as it got for the Reds, who had no answer to a powerful Sholing outfit.
