Hawks boss has grounds for concern

Have your say

The Hawks suffered a breakdown in communications in midweek after the club website announced the signings of midfielder Perry Ryan and goalkeeper Lyle Beasley.

Both have been on trial with the Hawks throughout the summer.

But the news they had signed came as a big surprise to manager Shaun Gale.

‘I can state categorically that, at this stage, neither of the players have signed a contract,’ said Gale.

‘Both have been with us during pre-season but I am still yet to sit down with the chairman to discuss matters.

‘I think the players want to be with us but we still have to see if it’s possible.

‘They have signed league forms so we can play them if required but I don’t consider a player signed until they have a contract.

‘The article was removed from the website after it was discovered the information was inaccurate.’

The Hawks’ scheduled friendly at Ryman League Lewes tonight has been cancelled, leaving them to continue their preparations at Wessex League premier division outfit New Milton Town tomorrow.

Gale expects to involve all his senior squad after resting some of them at Gosport Borough on Monday.

‘With the start of the league season just a week away, we are now getting to the nitty gritty,’ he said.

‘I have been reasonably happy with the way things have gone, although I would have liked to have seen us hit the back of the net a bit more.

‘We have two games left to get things right and I am still looking to bring in another striker.

‘I got close to bringing one in on loan but injuries at his club stopped them from releasing him.

‘Mark Nwokeji has done well for us in pre-season and he will get more chances when he has Lee Peacock up alongside him.

‘He will score goals and his record is up there with the best of them at our level.

‘It was a good work-out at Gosport and we were without three key players.

‘They will all be back in the reckoning this weekend.’

Other friendlies, tonight: Petersfield Town v Horndean. Tomorrow: Arundel v AFC Portchester, United Services v Lymington Town (HMS Collingwood, 1.30pm).
