G osport Borough recorded a 2-1 win over Weymouth in their final pre-season outing – now for the tough decision of selecting a side for the league opener.

Andy Forbes and Danny Smith scored to ensure Borough finished their friendly fixtures on a high.

But as yet no places have been nailed down in the team for the start of the Conference South campaign at home to Dover on Saturday.

Gosport used all 18 squad players in their final friendly and assistant boss Mick Catlin revealed they all have a chance of starting at the weekend.

He said: ‘No real decision has been made about who starts and who sits on the bench.

‘Any of the 18 or so lads who came on at various times against Weymouth could find themselves involved.

‘But we must wait and see.

‘We have managed to build a squad of players who are looking forward, as much as we are, to life in the Conference South.

‘I think we are all glad pre-season is over.

‘Everyone can now prepare for what promises to be an exciting time ahead for us.

‘We always knew Weymouth would be up for it, they made it very difficult for us but our lads kept going and got a result.’

Striker Forbes got Borough off to a fine start.

He took just five minutes to show his quality, chasing a long ball out of defence, controlling it as it dropped out of the sky and then chipping Weymouth keeper Jason Matthews to make it 1-0.

The visitors borrowed Gosport defender Rob Flooks for the afternoon and he was in superb form.

He cleared a Jamie Brown header off the line and then denied Forbes and Bennett.

Weymouth equalised when Mark Ford ran through to score.

But Smith settled the contest on 79 minutes with a superb bullet header from Sammy Igoe’s delivery.

Forbes and defender Lee Molyneaux had to be taken off injured in the first half but Gosport hope they will be fit to face Dover.
