Horndean excelled in front of their biggest crowd of the season to overcome Western League Bridport 3-1 in the FA Cup at Five Heads Park.

Nearly 200 spectators turned up on Non-League Day to witness the home side earn themselves £1,500 and a trip to Southern League Hungerford Town in the next round.

‘We played well even though it was “backs to the wall” in the second half,’ said Horndean manager Dave Carter.

‘The extra finance is so welcome for a little club like ours and our aim is to get as far in this competition as we can.

‘We are still unbeaten this season and have good depth in our squad.’

Gary Austin gave Horndean the perfect start after three minutes before Nathan Paxton tightened their grip with a second, midway through the half.

The visitors hit back from a corner with five minutes to go to the break, before putting the home side under pressure in the second period.

Central defender Alex Sheppard and goalkeeper Simon Howard were outstanding in the rearguard action and Bryn McKie sealed the home sides’ passage three minutes from time.

Ryman League division one south outfit Bognor steamrollered Combined Counties League minnows Camberley Town 5-1 to cruise into the next round.

The Rocks led by a Luke Nightingale goal at the break and further goals from Ben Johnson, Terry Dodd, an own goal and Jason Prior eased the hosts through.

Fellow Ryman League division one outfit Sittingbourne will visit Nyewood Lane in the next round.
