Moneyfields exited the Hampshire Senior Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Blackfield & Langley at Dover Road last night.
Miles Rutherford’s men were in charge for long periods but paid the price for missing chances.
The hosts made the early running, with Steve Hutchings heading Conor Bailey’s fine deep cross back into the danger area but nothing came of it.
The Copnor club were looking well organised and well drilled, though.
Former Hawks midfielder Shaun Wilkinson stood out.
He was deployed in a deep-lying midfield role – sweeping up in front of the back four.
Warren Hunt saw his shot charged down on the edge of the area but despite the home side looking the stronger outfit they could not find the net.
On 15 minutes, Hutchings and Hunt combined well and the visiting goalkeeper had to be alert.
Wayne Boud then missed a great chance for the visitors, 10 minutes before the break.
The former Fareham ace stabbed the ball into the side netting, with just Moneys keeper Cameron Scott to beat.
Both teams continued to struggle to find a route to goal at the start of the second period.
Moneys full-back Rob Evans was sent clear down the right, but Hutchings headed his cross wide from a good position.
Moneyfields continued pushing and Wilkinson saw his fierce drive beaten out by the Blackfield keeper.
At the other end, the visitors went close.
A thumping header from a corner was tipped over.
But Blackfield grabbed the lead soon after.
Another corner was headed down and Scott Sampson lifted the ball high into the net from six yards.
Hunt snatched at a good chance in front of goal and could only shot over as Moneys chased an equaliser.
Then a superb length-of-the field counter-attack ended with Conor Bailey firing wide.
It sadly wasn’t to be for Rutherford’s on the night.
