A second-half fightback saw Horndean edge a 3-2 success over Hamworthy at Five Heads Park.

Horndean included two new signings in Ben Buckland and Joe Knox but were forced to make a late change when Jack Warren failed a fitness test, to be replaced in midfield by Tommy Woodward.

The Hammers opened well and former Gosport winger Lee Chudy made himself busy along the line to sling in a cross that Deans defender Tom Chapman did well to clear ahead of Carl Bradley.

But on 10 minutes, a similar move was not dealt with by Horndean’s defence, leaving Joe Shovelton time and space to finish in style for 1-0.

A poor clearance from Horndean keeper Simon Howard was seized upon by Chudy who, with the goal at his mercy, fired across goal but past the far post.

Horndean finally began tor espond and saw Chamal Fenelon rip a free-kick wide of the target.

Only a goalline clearance by Steffan Penny preserved Hamworthy’s lead after Chapman had met a Woodward corner to power in a header that looked destined for the top corner.

The Deans kept up the pressure, with both Chapman and Woodward going close to a leveller.

Play soon switched to the other end, though, and Howard kept his side in the match with a fine save from Chudy.

On the stroke of half-time, Hamworthy’s Bradley spared the hosts again as he met the ball at the far post, only to sky the ball over the bar.

Nathan Paxton was brough on for Horndean in the second half to bring some much-needed punch up front.

And it proved to be an inspired move as, with his first touch, Paxton set up Louis Castles to ram home an equaliser from 10 yards.

And things got even better moments later when Fenelon’s fine run and finish put the Deans ahead.

It was then 3-1 on 65 minutes thanks to Dan Hayes and Paxton creating the easiest of chances for Fenelon to turn the ball into an empty net.

Horndean were given a scare late on when Chudy pulled a goal back.

But the hosts held on to take maximum points.
