Norris has to calm down before savouring wonder strike

David Norris did not trust himself to speak until an hour after the final whistle, following his remarkable last-ditch leveller.

The adrenaline was still pumping, long after his left-foot rocket flashed into the bottom corner of the Southampton net to earn a share of the spoils in the most dramatic of circumstances.

And Norris – normally a laid-back individual with a cheery outlook – knew exactly what it meant as he saw the celebrations unfold in the away section at St Mary’s.

After waiting to calm himself down before speaking to the media, Norris revealed it was a new experience for him in a long and successful career.

He said: ‘I’ve not had a feeling like that in my career.

‘I can’t remember anything about the minute after the goal.

‘It showed great belief for us to come back twice against a side who have been top of the league for most of the season.

‘Hopefully, that will set us up for the rest of the season.’

In an electric atmosphere, the home fans were silenced late on when Norris had the final say.

He said: ‘It was an unbelievable atmosphere – our fans were a different class.

‘We’d have been desperately disappointed for them if we’d have lost.

‘We know how much it meant to them.

‘Sometimes they might not realise that we’re aware of that.

‘I was speaking to fans before the match and some were saying that they’d rather win the match than stay up.

‘That sums up how much it meant to them.’
