Northeast frustrated he hasn't scored more centuries for Hampshire

SAM NORTHEAST admitted he's disappointed not to have made more big scores for Hampshire this season.

The batsman struck 42 on the first day of his side's County Championship division one clash with Yorkshire at the Ageas Bowl today.

Hampshire were all out for 187, with Lancashire registering 123 for four at stumps.

Northeast top scored for the hosts but fell eight runs short of a half-century.

The former Kent right-hander was frustrated he wasn't able to reach 50.

And having scored only one County Championship century and a half-century, he feels it's been the story of his maiden season at the Ageas Bowl.

'˜Batting hasn't been easy for the last month, playing in September is probably something to do with that,' said Northeast.

'˜There is no doubt there was something there for the bowlers  and we had to get through that little period.

'˜It was disappointing to get out when I did.

'˜I was building nicely with Gareth  Berg there and then the pitch got flatter.

'˜I have been frustrated about getting quite a few 40s and not go on and make a big one.'

Tom Bailey (four for 57) and Richard Gleeson (three for 34) did the damage with the ball for Lancashire, who have a small chance of avoiding relegation if they deliver a victory over Hampshire.

Only Oliver Soames (29), James Vince (22) and Gareth Berg (21) passed 20 alongside Northeast.

In reply, Alex Davies (three) and debutant Brooke Guest (eight) departed within the opening 10 overs, bowled by Fidel Edwards and Kyle Abbott respectively.

But Keaton Jennings stoked the ball around with watchful elegance.

The England opener, who has  been selected for the tour of Sri Lanka this winter, scored 48.

He shared an 83-run partnership with Liam Livingstone but was dismissed  by Ian Holland.

The Hampshire bowler then had night watchman Stephan Parry caught behind three balls later '“ leaving Lancashire on  123 for four and well short of much needed and meaningful batting bonus points.

Livingstone (46 not out) and Dane Vilas (five not out) will resume at the crease for the Red Rose tomorrow morning.
