But Mandarić decision to appoint Zajec as director of football proved the final straw for Redknapp and after guiding Portsmouth to safety in the Premier League in 2003-04 season, he quit as manager.

Also on this day in 2005, in a curious twist of fate the man who replaced Redknapp as Pompey's full time manager Alain Perrin was sacked.

Exactly a year to the day after Redknapp had walked out.

Perrin was named Portsmouth's full time manager in April 2005, taking over from caretaker Velimir Zajec, who had been in charge since Redknapp had left.

However after only four months in the job and achieving just four wins in 20 games, leaving Pompey languishing in the relegation zone, the Frenchman was sacked on November 24, 2005.Â
