The Blues caretaker boss explained he has provided his input to the board as their managerial hunt gathers pace.

And Waddock has laid down the credentials he feels are needed to take the club forward.

Pompey have made a move for Chesterfield manager Paul Cook, after assembling their shortlist of candidates to succeed Andy Awford.

Waddock feels the man coming in requires experience of gaining promotion.

He also reckons the new boss should have a big persona and practice of handling a club with high expectations.

Waddock said: ‘It’s quite simple, we are looking for someone to come in, take it forward and get us promoted.

‘It’s a simple one to answer, but a difficult one to put in place.

‘You need a big personality to come in here.

‘You probably need to have managed a big club to handle that.

‘There’s expectation, so someone who has gained promotions before and knows how to do it.

‘It will be a conversation between board members which decides that.

‘But, because it’s a club the size of Portsmouth with all of its history, expectations are even greater.’

Waddock stated he was happy to forward his thoughts on the way forward for Pompey.

But, ultimately, the decision lies away from the caretaker boss.

He said: ‘I’ve spoken to the chairman and chief executive.

‘I’m happy to give my input, but it’s what they decide – not what I think.

‘It’s their decision.’
