Opinion: Fratton faithful need to enjoy the moment - this is Portsmouth after all

Third in the league, unbeaten at home for the season, Arsenal to come in one cup, a Wembley visit assured in another.

My advice to Pompey fans is simple – enjoy this moment.

That especially goes for young fans, who may be under the impression that life following the Blues is always this rosy.

Those of us who are older know different.

This season has turned into a remarkable one. If you consider how things were in September and October, you can’t believe the success we’ve seen since.

We were in the bottom half, a good proportion of the fan base was roughly halfway between disillusioned and angry, and it looked like the season was going to end in the ‘lost’ category.

But slowly and without fanfare, the manager, his staff and the players have turned it round.

I always thought things would improve but didn’t expect to be in the position we’re in after March dawned this weekend.

There are those still going on about ‘Jacketball’ and how each and every win holds no enjoyment for them.

They're entitled to their opinions, of course, but I just don’t get that outlook.

Some seem like they’d be happier if we were still 15th.

Of course there are no guarantees about how the next couple of months will pan out.

Arsenal are strong favourites to knock us out of the Cup tonight, though I do still have an inkling we (and by that I mean players AND fans) may stun them.

Wembley will be a grand day out for the 50,000, although won’t stick too long in the memory if we lose.

As for promotion, I still think we’ll be in the play-offs rather than the automatics, but you never know.

At least if we get to the play-off final we’ll know the way to the venue.
