Palace point was for Pompey road warriors

Jason Pearce admitted his relief to at last harvest an away return for Pompey's long-suffering travelling support.

Pearce helped the Blues to a hard-earned 0-0 draw at high-flying Crystal Palace on Tuesday night.

Pompey could have nicked all three points as the 23-year-old headed against the post in the first half.

Dave Kitson then headed a gilt-edged opportunity over the top from a few yards out in stoppage time.

The point at Selhurst Park put an end to five consecutive defeats on the bounce on the team’s travels.

Pearce saw the result as reward for the those who have loyally followed the team on the road.

Over 1,300 Pompey fans travelled to watch the game just 72 hours after Saturday’s 3-1 loss at Pride Park.

Now Pearce wants to see that return built on.

He said: ‘The performance at the weekend wasn’t good enough, especially the first half.

‘So we’re pleased to go away and be able to get a good draw.

‘Hopefully, the fans would have been delighted with the performance.

‘It was just a shame we couldn’t get the three points for them.

‘I think the performance was right and something we can build on, though.

‘We have to look up the table.

‘If we can find performances like Tuesday we’ll be looking up the table for sure.

‘We have to put those performances in week-in, week out.

‘We haven’t done that. That’s why we are in the position we’re in.

‘Hopefully, we can build on Palace and start moving in the right direction.’

Pearce believes keeping Palace quiet early on, after shipping three goals in 33 minutes on Saturday, was key.

He said ‘We wanted to keep it tight for 20 minutes on Tuesday, and we did that.

‘The first 20 minutes is vital and it gives you something to build on.

‘Everyone worked their socks off to get the point. We could have got the three points.’
