Pompey grab Bohemians warm-up victory

A classy Danny Rose finish and piece of predatory work from Conor Chaplin did the first-half damage.

The game was marred, however, to a horrible injury to young Bohemians defender Stephen Best after a collision with Kyle Bennett.

Bohemians provided a reasonable test for Paul Cook’s side using a mix of first team and under-19 players after playing a league game last night against Bray Wanderers.

But it proved a comfortable afternoon for Pompey against the Dublin-based side.

Carl Baker forced an early save from former Ipswich keeper Shane Supple before Milan Lalkovic angled a drive at him after 20 minutes.

The game was stopped after 29 minutes following a horrible injury to Bohemians defender Stephen Best.

Kyle Bennett overran the ball when dribbling and the pair collided, leading to Best leaving the field on a stretcher receiving oxygen.

Pompey took the lead after 33 minutes when Chaplin freed Rose, who finished with a delightful dinked effort from a tight angle.

Chaplin doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time as he intercepted a backpass and coolly knocked the ball past Supple before tapping into the empty net.

Baker drifted a shot wide three minutes after the restart following a decent run down the left from Lalkovic.

Then Dave Mulcahy made a fine saving tackle to deny Chaplin, with Baker firing the follow-up at Supple.

Bohemians’ best chance of the game saw Mark Quigley hit a fine volley from 20 yards which Michael Crowe was equal to.

Pompey made a string of changes which slowed the pace of the game as the half wore on.

And there a couple of late chances with Ben Tollitt poking a shot wide and Gary Roberts’ firing over from a fine Tollitt delivery.

Pompey now play Hawks in their next warm-up game on Wednesday (7pm).
