On this day in 2005, injury-plagued Svetoslav Todorov scored his first goal for Pompey in two-and-a-half years.

The date was December 17, and his goal – after coming on as a first-half substitute – was enough to earn Pompey a 1-0 Premiership victory over West Brom at Fratton Park.

It was the Bulgarian’s first notch since scoring a hat-trick against Bradford on the last day of the 2002-03 season, when the Blues won the Championship title.

Todorov only played one game the following season – against Liverpool in March 2004 – after he damaged his cruciate knee ligament on the eve of the club’s first season back in the top flight.

An operation in May 2004 meant, though, that he missed out on playing in that year’s European Championships and the entire 2004-05 season.

The front man was deemed fit to play in the 2005-06 season, although was mostly used as a sub.

The goals, however, failed to flow for the fans’ favourite as he only registered another three for the entire camapign.

After scoring twice for the Blues in the opening three games of the 2006–07 season, Todorov joined Wigan Athletic in August 2006 on a season-long loan.

He joined Charlton Athletic in July 2007 on a free transfer in a one-year deal, with his last Pompey appearance coming in a 1-1 draw at Fulham on March 31, 2007.
