Pompey promotion watch: What to look out for tomorrow
The race for promotion steps up a gear tomorrow, with Pompey once again eager to see how events will unfold.
The Blues’ trip to third-placed Carlisle will, of course, have a bearing on how the League Two table will look come 5pm tomorrow.
A win will see Cook’s side close the gap on the automatic promotion places, with their game in hand against Crawley then potentially propelling them into the top three.
A draw wouldn’t be a disaster, but defeat would, in all likelihood, mean it’s the play-offs at best for Pompey this season.
Let’s not dwell on that, though, and instead look to see what other key fixtures there are in the promotion race.
League leaders Doncaster (64 points) will be looking to turn around their recent dip in form as they host relegation-threatened Accrington Stanley.
Donny are yet to pick up a win this month - drawing three and losing one out of their past four fixtures.
Stanley currently sit 19th in the table but have taken seven points from their past four games.
Second-placed Plymouth (61) travel to Luton, who sit fourth on 53 points, in another massive game at the top end of the standings.
Plymouth will be keen to get a win under their belt, after losing to Leyton Orient and drawing against Hartlepool in their past two games.
But they’ll have to do it the hard way, with the Hatters picking up 11 points from a possible 15 so far in February.
Sixth-placed Exeter (50) could potentially move above Pompey if they beat Blackpool at St James’ Park and Cook & Co fail to win at Brunton Park.
But the Blues will drop no further than sixth if results don’t go their way tomorrow.
Seventh-placed Colchester hosts Hartlepool but are five points adrift on 47 points.
Meanwhile, Mansfield, who are outside the play-off places on goal difference, know a win against Newport could see them only move up one place in the table.
For other teams with hopes of promotion, Stevenage (ninth) travel to Crewe, 10th-placed Wycombe host Crawley, and Barnet (11th) host Cambridge.
