Aussie trio on target for Pompey

Pompey Academy coach Paul Smalley included Australians Ryan Williams and Patrick Antelmi in his side who crushed a youthful Hawks outfit 5-0 at Staunton School yesterday.

And both Williams and Antelmi came up trumps with a goal apiece in the opening 15 minutes – and went on to contribute much as Pompey dominated long periods of the match.

Even though the pair are not yet able to play in the Academy League until the Australian FA release the paperwork, their efforts in several friendly matches have shown they will be valuable assets.

To their credit, the Hawks battled for the entire 90 minutes, although the nearest they came to a goal was an effort that rebounded back into play off the underside of the crossbar.

Blues keeper Matt Gledhill was not often troubled, though his safe handling of several dangerous crosses was a feature, as was the no-nonsense defending of central defender Dan Bennett, ably assisted by Aussie Billy Tsovolos.

Pompey missed a hatful of far-post chances when simple headers would surely have doubled the final scoreline.

But the goal of the match was scored by James Jennings who raced on to Ashley Harris' superb through ball to fire home number three.

Lewis Stockford was also on Pompey's scoresheet – just before, with seconds left before the final whistle, Hawks defender Liam Flanaghan was red carded for a foul in his own penalty area, leaving another impressive Aussie Jordan Fitzharris to step up and score the penalty.

Pompey Academy: Gledhill, Fitzharris, Butler, Tsovolos, Bennett, Grant, Jennings, Harris, Williams, Colston, Antelmi. Substitutes: Walshe, Stockford, Tallack, Magri, Seeley.
