Andy Awford was adamant his team deserved a return today after Shrewsbury’s fortunate winner.

Pompey went down to a 2-1 defeat at Greenhous Meadow after Connor Goldson’s 72nd-minute cross flew straight in.

The Blues started ferociously and took the lead from the spot through Jed Wallace.

James Wesolowski levelled 12 minutes later before Goldson’s fortunate intervention.

Awford was left floored by the outcome but knows he and the fans can take heart from his side’s performance at a ground where the home side remain unbeaten this season.

He said: ‘We deserved something from that.

‘The way we got beat is so disappointing.

‘He didn’t mean it, and I’m sure they will say they earned that slice of the luck.

‘But they know and we know that we should have got something from the game.’

Awford believes his team can carry forward impetus from much of the display produced from his side.

He said: ‘I don’t think that we have lost too much momentum because of the performance.

‘We have to be better in certain areas. But I’m always honest and I know we deserved a return from the match.’
