Andy Awford believes Pompey have landed a ‘great draw’ after being matched with Stoke in the Capital One Cup second round.
The Blues will make the trip to Mark Hughes’ side on August 26/27 following their win over Peterborough.
It will pitch them against former players Peter Crouch, Asmir Begovic and Marc Wilson, all nowadays on the Premier League club’s books.
Pompey missed a host of other top-flight names in the seeded draw including Manchester United and Southampton.
But Awford is relishing the trip to the Britannia Stadium.
He said: ‘I am delighted, it is a great draw for us.
‘I’ve said before, if we were getting a home draw I would want it to be somebody in our league so it would give us the best possible chance to progress.
‘But if we were to be drawn away you would want to visit a Premier League ground – which is what we have managed to land.
‘Of course we will do our best to go there and try to get a result. We’d love to upset the apple cart and surprise a few people.
‘We all cling onto repeating what Bradford did a couple of years ago by reaching the final of this competition.
‘But it will be a great experience for the players and the fans and is something we can all look forward to in a few week’s time.
‘As we all know, the league takes precedence over everything else and that remains our priority.’
Meanwhile, Pompey are urging fans to get in touch if they have not yet received their season tickets.
All cards have now been sent out to customers, with a final delivery date of Monday, August 11.
Anyone whose cards have still not arrived should urgently contact the ticket office on (023) 9277 8559 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
