Pompey v Charlton: pre-match talking points

ANDY AWFORD will weigh up shuffling his Pompey pack for Peterborough tonight.

But the Capital One Cup clash with the Posh is likely to be too early to throw Joe Devera and Ricky Holmes in for starts.

Devera has recovered from a hamstring injury and Holmes is over a groin problem.

But Awford is set to err on the side of caution with the pair.

The Blues manager knows he has options over changing the side which got a 1-1 draw at Exeter on Saturday.

He was impressed with how the likes of Nigel Atangana and Miles Storey made an impression off the bench against the Grecians.

They will all come into his thinking for the first-round tie against Darren Ferguson’s side.

Awford said: ‘It’s probably is a bit too early (for Holmes and Devera), but we will just assess them and a couple of others to make sure there are no bumps and bruises after the weekend

‘Then I will have a head count and make a decision.

‘We have got a very hectic schedule.

‘But I don’t go into any game to lose it, and the team that we pick will be capable of winning

‘It’s a real tough game, it’s probably as tough a draw as we could have faced in the competition.

‘We will have a good go.

‘Every single player passed fit is available for selection.

‘So if we want to make changes we can.

‘We saw on Saturday the players who came on made an impact.

‘I’m hoping, if I do change things around, they can make an impact.’

Awford allayed any injury concerns over Jed Wallace.

The midfielder pulled up with cramp in the second half on Saturday.

He said: ‘Jed got cramp and I thought he’d hurt his groin at one point.

‘It was cramp, though, so we were pleased with that.

‘If you play 90 minutes you don’t get cramp in training. But on game day, with that chemical imbalance or whatever happens, it can.

‘I think first-day euphoria played a part.

‘He put a terrific amount of effort in. The occasion is maybe where it was generated.’
