Andy Awford is exploring the loan market in a bid to bolster Pompey’s injury-hit defence.

The Blues’ boss has admitted there is the possibility Jack Whatmough will not play again this season after sustaining knee ligament damage against Cheltenham.

He joins fellow central defender Paul Robinson, who is nursing a broken cheekbone. on the sidelines.

Now Awford is seeking to bring in a loan defender in time for Saturday’s trip to AFC Wimbledon.

‘There is a possibility Jack could be out for the rest of the season,’ said Awford.

‘There is ligament damage and we will assess it in the next few days.

‘He will go back in again for another scan once the swelling has gone down.

‘We are looking at the loan market and trying to get the best that is available.

‘We won’t rush it, we’ll make sure we get the right one, two, three or whatever, but with the injuries that have clocked up, especially in the centre of defence, we are a little bit light there.

‘We will look to do something before the weekend.’
