Andy Awford has turned down the chance to become Guy Whittingham’s number two.
The Pompey hero will return to his role as the club’s Academy manager, after weighing up the chance to link up with the first team with Whittingham.
The pair have overseen first-team duties after Michael Appleton left the club in November.
Whittingham made it clear he wanted the man who made 361 appearances for his only league club as his assistant after being named as boss last month.
But after a period of consideration, the 40-year-old has chosen to return to overseeing the club’s youth operation.
Awford said: ‘It was a tough decision and I’ve loved being involved with Guy and the first team, but I want to see through the job that I’ve started with the Academy.’
