However, long-time pursuers Barnsley have stepped up their interest by trying to surpass Coventry’s offer, sparking a bidding war.

It adds late drama to the transfer saga of the summer – although Coventry are still expected to capture Chaplin.

The 21-year-old has long made it clear he prefers a move to the Ricoh Arena and, following Andre Green’s loan arrival, Pompey have agreed to his departure.

Despite his Fratton Park deal running out at the season’s end, it is understand Pompey will receive £500,000 for the striker once the potential deal is made permanent.

In addition, add-ons and sell-on clauses will yield future windfalls.

Meanwhile, Marcus Tavernier remains on Pompey’s radar, although a loan agreement is presently unlikely.

The News first revealed the Blues’ interest in the Middlesbrough left winger in July.
