Gaffer: Pompey draw would have been a robbery

Pompey have a trio of injury doubts ahead of Saturday’s crucial Sheffield United clash.

The Blues can take another giant stride towards play-off contention with a Fratton Park victory over Micky Adams’ relegation strugglers.

But that progress could be checked with concerns over Liam Lawrence, Hayden Mullins and Joel Ward’s fitness.

Lawrence was on the bench on Tuesday night against Scunthorpe after two matches out with a calf problem.

But Steve Cotterill revealed his presence was merely for show and there was never a chance of the Republic of Ireland international making an appearance.

He has so far trained just once after coming back from injury.

Meanwhile, Mullins limped out of the Scunthorpe action after 22 minutes, being replaced by Aaron Mokoena.

He has been diagnosed with a calf problem – a different complaint to the knee he injured against Ipswich at the weekend.

In addition, Ward didn’t make the squad at all with the calf injury he sustained at Portman Road.

Now the Blues boss must wait to see whether the threesome can come into the reckoning for the visit of the Blades.

He said: ‘Hayden came off with a calf problem, which is different to the other injury he had.

‘Joel also missed the game with a calf injury.

‘As for Liam, he was never going to play. It was just a gee-up for everybody else.

‘It just looks as though we have filled our bench a little bit more, so I threw him in there.

‘I don’t know at the moment whether any of them will play on Saturday.

‘It’s a little bit early. I don’t really want to think about it just now.’
