Pompey boss: Youngster can prove critics wrong

Have your say

Ritchie De Laet is happy to carry on being Mr Versatile for Pompey.

The on-loan Belgian insisted he had no problem playing in any position to help Steve Cotterill’s side get their season firing.

De Laet, below, has been used at left-back, right-back and even as a winger since joining from Manchester United earlier this month.

The 22-year-old admitted being used in an attacking role, as he was when Pompey chased the game against Burnley, was a new experience for him.

He feels his best position is at full-back.

But he will be more than willing to give 100 per cent in any position for his new side as they prepare to travel to league leaders QPR tomorrow.

De Laet said: ‘Playing left-wing against Burnley was something new for me.

‘But I’ll play anywhere the gaffer wants me to.

‘I will try to do a job wherever he uses me.

‘We were 2-1 behind against Burnley, so we needed to do something to try to get something.

‘If I’m one of the men the gaffer wants to throw forward, I’m more than happy to do that.

‘I’d probably be best of at full-back. I don’t know if left or right is where I’m most suited but it’s probably my best position.’

Despite arriving from the club top of the pile in the Premier League, De Laet has been impressed with the quality of his Pompey team-mates.

He feels the top-flight experience of many of the players will prove invaluable over the rest of the campaign.

De Laet said: ‘They are brilliant lads, all of them.

‘There are a lot of lads who have played Premier League football.

‘It’s good to be around and learn from them.

‘The quality is there. We can play and we can mix it up.’
